It is rather inspiring and brings a little glow to my heart when I have the chance to see my friends shine and share their talents. A friend of mine who is a talented writer and mother submitted her story to ‘Listen to your Mother,’ her story was accepted and I got to see her and about 12 other women tell their stories of motherhood.
It was an amazing way to spend a Sunday afternoon. As these stories of new and seasoned mothers shared their wisdom I found myself thinking about my future as a mother, and looking back on my own mother. Admittedly, I’m terrified and elated for what’s to come in equal measure.
‘Listen to your Mother’ is now in about 32 cities across the U.S. You may have missed it this year, but if you have a chance, go see the stories next year. Luckily, there is an anthology book of stories coming out next year, too. I can’t wait!
This video is from the Milwaukee 2013 cast of Listen to Your Mother…there’s plenty of other great videos to watch, listen and learn.
My friend, Lane’s essay should be up eventually on the ‘Listen to your Mother’ site, but she also recently had an essay on motherhood featured on our local public radio station. Another good read for Mother’s Day. Here’s a little excerpt but make sure you read or listen to the rest!
“Of course this isn’t true. One of the greatest lessons many of us will need to learn is that we can’t be responsible for every breath, feeling and action our children take. But sometimes it seems so impossible that we could grow our babies inside our very being and not feel accountable for every single thing.”
Happy Mother’s Day!
